Over the last few years there has been a huge shift towards prioritising climate awareness and sustainability, and to highlight how countries & regions have been performing the Global Green Destination Days awards have been held annually for the last 6 years. The initiative & award ceremony is open to all countries and is designed to highlight those that are making a serious effort to be ‘safe, smart and sustainable’.

We keep saying it, our clients keep saying it, and our visitors keep saying it – Montenegro is by far one of the most beautiful countries, not only in the Adriatic, but also in the World, and we are becoming more and more prevalent in travel magazines and online articles.

I bet when you think of Montenegro, you don’t think of award winning wines, and that when you get home and have a glass of red or white, that it won’t be from Montenegro? Well, maybe the next bottle you buy should be from this wonderful country, as some of our wines have recently won medals at the famous Decanter World Wine Awards, that were recently held in London.

Montenegro is quite honestly one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever visited, and though I’m still fairly young, over the years I’ve been able to visit some of the world’s most amazing places including the Caribbean, Australia, and multiple countries throughout Europe.

In this edition from Risan, we continue our trip through the Boka Bay towards the medieval town of Kotor, the cultural pearl of Montenegro, recognized by UNESCO.

Over the last few years Montenegro has become more and more popular not just with tourists but also for people who wish to take advantage of the low purchase tax system here, among with the many other benefits on offer, and buy a property whether it’s for use as a holiday home, permanent home or as rental investment, so, we thought we’d put together a simple ‘how to’ article for you on the process of buying in Montenegro.

Last month on the 15th June the first regatta of the year was allowed to be held by the Montenegro government, a joyous occasion for the country as a whole, and for the area of Herceg Novi, as we look towards building the future again after Covid-19.

Back in May Montenegro became the first country in Europe to declare itself free of Covid-19, and as a result it’s borders were opened to tourists again on the 1st June, a massive positive for a country that relies so heavily on International visitors, and up until Covid-19 struck, had been becoming increasingly popular year on year.

Montenegro is a country well known for its stunning scenery and pristine beaches, and since the Internationally accepted & recognised Blue Flag scheme was introduced in Montenegro back in 2003, 32 bathing areas have now come under the spotlight, and have met the necessary criteria to be awarded ‘Blue Flag’ status.

On our journey throughout the coast of Montenegro, 30 minutes from Herceg Novi into the Bay of Kotor we are stoping in Risan. Founded as a small but beautiful village, Risan traces its origins to the ancient settlement of Rhizon, the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor. Lying in the innermost portion of the bay, the settlement was protected from the interior by inaccessible limestone cliffs of the Orjen mountain, the highest range of eastern Adriatic, and through several following narrow straits in the Boka Kotorska from the open sea.

Starting our journey through the cities of Montenegro we make the first stop in Herceg Novi. This coastal town is located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen. It is also recognisable by the abundance of mimosa trees and its numerous flights of stairs. The medieval town was founded on a small fishing village as a fortress in 1382.

The festival of flowers in honor of the flower of Mimosa was established in Herceg-Novi in 1969. The idea came to life that year and since then it has been celebrated as a tourist event which makes the city of Herceg Novi full of numerous cultural and sporting events during the winter months as well as with inevitable festival of fish, wine and music, costume ball and carnival parades. 

‘Stars of Wild Beauty’ will be held for the first time in Montenegro, from November 25 to 30, with members of the judging panel being eminent representatives from both foreign and domestic production companies, who will give awards to the best films in 30 categories.

The International award ceremony was held in London on October 24, 2019. This award is an even greater incentive for us to develop.
